BCFPHN members meet with Delegate Cullison

Our community nurses provide an invaluable service to the public. As with any job however, training is of the utmost importance. Our members want the training they need to do their job well for Marylanders. Following the leadership of president Karen Pilecki the union has been working with Del. Bonnie Cullison to develop training standards and expand on existing training. The workgroup met in Del. Cullison’s Annapolis office on Tuesday September 17, 2019.The meeting included BCFPHN leadership as well as community nurses from across the state including from AFSCME and MCGEO.

Del. Cullison brought in professors from the University of Maryland to think through the best way to increase training across the state. Currently, there’s no baseline for training and while uniformity is not what the group seeks, establishing a baseline is something the groups hopes to accomplish. Drs. Carolyn Nganga-Good and Pat McLaine shared their research with the group. Also in attendance was Fran Phillips, the Maryland Department of Health Deputy Secretary for Public Health.

The all-hands-on-deck approach shows how important the issue of training is to public health community nurses across the state. BCFPHN have been leading the way to increase the quality of training nurses receive, which will ultimately increase the quality of care for patients in Marylander. Community nursing and public healthcare looks different in different jurisdictions, so it is important that our members at BCFPHN be in constant conversation with community and public health nurses from across the state to exchange ideas and be in search of best practices.
