Unions on Display in Baltimore County

The locals that serve members in Baltimore county were out and about engaging public employees. Union Day was a success as the Baltimore County Federation of Public Employees and the Baltimore County Federation of Public Health Nurses met members and prospective members at their worksite to have conversation around the benefits of joining the union and recent updates to union contracts. Organizers Frank Pratka and Janell Edmonds manned tables in a 3rd floor break room on Friday November 22nd at the Drumcastle County Government Office.

Pratka said the union day was an opportunity to get out and talk with the membership. For those who weren’t members that came up to the table, organizers shared how the union had negotiated the contract for them. The contract covers issues such as wages, benefits, and work hours. Some who weren’t members of the union learned how the perks of working for the county come in large part to negotiations from the union.

BCFPHN President Karen Pilecki stopped by the tables multiple times during the day. At one point she huddled with Edmonds to discuss the pay schedule for county nurses. Other members who were familiar with the two organizers stopped by the table to chat and pick up goodies the organizers brought with them. There were some who weren’t members who came by the table for information saying the union activists in the office had sent them over. Members can look forward to more Union Day’s in the coming months as both BCFPE and BCFPHN continue to increase their presence and visibility among county workers.
